Vanessa Hudgens to Film Travel Documentary in the Philippines


Vanessa Hudgens, the Asian-American actress who began her career on Disney’s “High School Musical” series, will shoot a travel documentary in the Philippines, her mother’s birthplace.

Untitled Project will be filmed in Palawan and Manila in March. Paul Soriano serves as director, producer and executive producer. Mark A. Victor of TEN17P will also serve as executive producer. No distributors, broadcasters or streaming platforms have been disclosed.

Soriano’s most recent credits include directing the 2019 film “Mananita” and the biopic “The Kuraf Kid.”

The documentary is said to show the relationship between Hudgens and her Filipino mother, Gina, who immigrated to the United States at the age of 25, and Hudgens’ younger sister, Stella.

Since “High School Musical,” Hudgens has appeared in “Spring Break,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Bad Boys Forever,” and the Oscar-nominated Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed musical “Tick, Tick… boom! Hudgens executive produced and starred in the films “The Knight Before Christmas” and all three “Princess Transformation” series for Netflix. Hudgens will next star in the upcoming films “French Girl” and ” Bad Boys 4″.

“I feel like our story is so relevant to so many women around the world,” Hudgens said in a statement announcing the documentary. “The more we can share, the more we can inspire each other.”

“We are honored to be working with Vanessa on this film project. It is inspiring that, with everything she has achieved in life, she wants to discover her Filipino roots and pay homage to her mother’s country. Soriano’s previous production, Lullaby of a Sad Mystery (2016), won the Special Film Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, and his 2013 production, Transit, was selected for an Academy Award in the Philippine Foreign Language Film category. He is also the Presidential Creative Advisor to the Philippine government.
