Vakkaru Maldives’ new resident marine biologist
Vakkaru Maldives Resort has appointed Diana Vergara as Resident Marine Biologist to enhance guest experience and marine biology programs.
Diana’s responsibilities include raising environmental awareness among guests, as well as researching and monitoring the island’s reefs and corals. She will also lead snorkel excursions and give informative talks on conservation for adults.
Speaking about her new role, Diana said: “My goal at Vakkaru is to connect with others, create awareness and share my passion for the amazing underwater world. I am excited to be part of the team and look forward to Let’s work together to protect our oceans and nature, especially in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Diana grew up by the sea and has a passion for all animals, especially marine animals such as orcas, whales, turtles and sharks.
Curious to learn more about the behavior of these animals and how humans can help protect our biodiversity, she studied marine biology and obtained a degree in Marine Biology and Coastal Science from the Federal University of Fluminense (UFF) in Brazil. Environmental Master’s Degree. The Colombian national is also an experienced scuba diver and is certified as an Open Water PADI and Project AWARE Instructor. Additionally, she is an instructor certified Enriched Air Diver, Deep Sea Diver, Digital Underwater Photographer, Wreck Diver, and Fish Identification.
“For the past seven years I have been working in marine biology, ecosystem monitoring (coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses), benthic community analysis, invasive species, coral gardening and photo identification of some marine animals in Colombia, Brazil and the Maldives,” said Diana, who has worked at several resorts in the Maldives.

Some of the programs available to guests of Vakkaru include:
– coral adoption, they can do their part to protect the reef fish and marine species that live around the island by taking coral frames and planting them in specially designed structures, which are then placed in coral nurseries on the reefs close to Vakkaru . Guests will receive a certificate upon completion of the program, and the resort will provide regular updates on coral growth progress and overall health.

Take a guided snorkel or dive trip around the House Reef and beyond, where a resident expert will accompany guests on a journey of discovery into the underwater world, pointing out interesting features and unique marine life.
