Undersecretary of State Sherman Meets with First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho of the Republic of Korea

Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met with Cho Hyun-dong, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in Tokyo today to discuss a range of issues to further strengthen the U.S.-South Korea alliance and deepen the partnership. Deputy State Secretary Cho and First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs condemned the recent ballistic missile launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) as reckless and destabilizing regional and global security. Deputy Secretary Sherman reiterated that the United States’ commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan remains unwavering, and we will continue to pursue serious and ongoing dialogue with North Korea. Noting the strength of the U.S.-South Korea economic relationship, the Under Secretary and First Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of working together to improve supply chain resilience and strengthen the economic security of both countries. The Deputy Secretary thanked the Republic of Korea for its continued support for Ukraine and commended our deepening cooperation on a range of issues in the Indo-Pacific region.
