December is upon us and so are the holidays. We guarantee that most of you plan to leave Yangon as soon as your vacation arrives. Traveling within Myanmar is fantastic at any time of year, but it depends on the right climate for a decent experience. So we’ve put together a list of cool-weather December destinations, especially the Highlands and Foothills. check it out.
old bagan
Located on the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River, Bagan is home to more than 2,200 temples dating from the 11th to 13th centuries. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, this is the best time to visit Old Bagan in December as hot air balloons fly over the beautiful city at this time of year. Watch the sunset, explore historic temples, and fly over this magical land in these momentous balloons for the experience of a lifetime.
Taunggyi, Inle and Kalaw
Taunggyi is the capital and largest city of Shan State and the fifth largest city in Myanmar. Although the famous Tazaungdaing Hot Air Balloon Festival is over, I don’t regret choosing Taunggyi as my December destination. Visit Inle Lake, then experience the majestic hills and quaint floating villages, monasteries and handicraft culture. Then trek to the mountain city of Kalaw, stay at least one night, and watch the sky full of stars.

Hsipaw is a beautiful town in Shan State. Also known as Thibaw, this is a vibrant place if you want to learn more about Shan culture and its history. Hsipaw is known for its beautiful scenery, not least because it is surrounded by mountains and you can hike through significant countryside. If train travel is your thing, then don’t miss out on taking the train from Mandalay to Hsipaw, one of the most scenic experiences in Shan State.
Kengtung
Keng Tung is the largest town in eastern Shan State; a former British administrative outpost, once known as the capital of the Golden Triangle. Today, it is one of the most remote areas of Myanmar that tourists are allowed to visit. Located in the southeastern corner of the vast Shan State; bordered by China, Laos and Thailand, hill tribes, rice terraces, The waterfalls, local market, and local food are highlights if you visit this interesting town.

Leigu is the capital of Kayah State in Myanmar, located on the banks of the Pilu River. Residents are mostly Kayah, and Myanmar’s largest hydroelectric power plant is being built 20 kilometers east of the city, known as Lawpita Waterfall. The main highlight is the Thiri-Mingalar Taung Kwe Pagoda in the center of town where you can watch the beautiful sunset, while the limestone caves, waterfalls, cathedral and local textile shops are must-sees. Don’t forget to try the Kayah sausage!

Mogok, a world-renowned ruby producing area, is a mountain town in the Mandalay region that has been producing the best rubies for centuries. Surrounded by mountains, the valley has an air of mystery and has been off-limits to foreigners for five years, allowing only tourists with permits. Inhabited by Nepali Gurkhas, Burmese, Paoh, Chin, Kokang, Karen, Chinese and Indians, Mogok is one of the best places to visit in December, with temples spread all over the town and close to The ruby mine and the British war cemetery lie outside the nearby Lisu village. Here, mountain noodle soup and local tea are popular.
Putao
Putao is located in the northernmost tip of Kachin State, where you can overlook the important Hkakabo Razi and other snow-capped mountains. The Putao region is famous for its wide variety of endemic birds and rare orchids, especially the endangered species “Black Orchid” in the east and west mountains of Putao. The town also attracts trekking enthusiasts to the Hkakabo Razi base camp near Tahaundam.Grape rafting is one of the most popular activities among tourists
