Time magazine hails Laos resort Luang Prabang as one of the world’s greatest places in 2023

Vientiane, March 19 (Laos Times/ANN): Time magazine, a leading American news magazine, called Luang Prabang a “hidden paradise” and recommended it as one of the 50 greatest places in the world in 2023.

Luang Prabang is tied with Phuket and Thailand’s Isaan region as the only three places in Southeast Asia to make the destination list.

Publishers laud Luang Prabang’s magnificent natural setting, citing turquoise waterfalls, Buddhist temples and sunset cruises on the Mekong River as highlights of the ancient capital. It notes that “despite its location in the jungle-covered mountains of Laos, the former royal capital isn’t just for backpackers.”

According to Time magazine, the town is home to a number of exquisite boutique hotels housed in French colonial buildings such as the Amantaka and Sofitel Luang Prabang, which could be an ideal way to stay and experience the UNESCO World Heritage town.

The magazine also recommends visiting the Center for Traditional Arts and Ethnology, a museum dedicated to the country’s 50 ethnic groups and 160 ethnic subgroups, and the Free the Bears Wildlife Sanctuary, home to more than 100 animals protected from poaching moon and sun bear.

Additionally, visitors can visit the Tamarind Cooking School and learn why Gordon Ramsay named Laos one of the world’s top culinary destinations.

The Laos-China Railway, which opened online reservations this week, was also highly praised by Time Magazine, “The train turns a 12-hour bus ride from Vientiane to Luang Prabang into a two-hour scenic journey.” – Lao Times
