Bangladeshi passports and their types

Bangladeshi passports have historically scored poorly globally since independence. According to the 2023 Henley Passport Index, Bangladesh ranks 99th globally with a mobility score of 40. The Mobility Score estimates that with a Bangladeshi passport, one’s global reach is about 24%, far lower than many countries.

These rankings are only for ordinary Bangladeshi passports. There are three types of valid passports in Bangladesh. all these are:

Ordinary passport

Bangladeshi service passports are issued to government employees of the country. Passports are issued as a special designation for individuals representing Bangladesh in any official capacity. The features of official passports are similar to ordinary passports. With certain exceptions, many visa requirements in different countries are waived for holders of official passports. Holders of official passports will also need to obtain a NOC from their respective government agencies before travelling.

Diplomatic passports are issued to diplomats representing Bangladesh in different foreign missions and embassies. These passports have special powers granted by the Geneva Conventions. In addition to members of the Bangladesh Foreign Service Corps, diplomatic passports are issued for the President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the House of Representatives in accordance with Bangladesh priority. Holders of diplomatic passports have visa-free access to almost every country in the world. They are also granted diplomatic immunity, barring them from being prosecuted in any way.

Types of Entry Provided by Bangladeshi Passport

Currently, Bangladeshi passport holders enjoy four visa services in 40 different countries around the world. all these are:


Visa-free entry allows direct travel between the two countries as long as the traveler holds a valid passport. Conditions for visa-free entry are stipulated by bilateral or unilateral agreements between the two countries to promote strategic relations and other mutual benefits.

Arrival visa

Visa on Arrival is between Pre-Visa and Visa-Free Entry. In case of visa-on-arrival, Bangladeshi passport holders will be able to travel to a country and get a visa stamp from the designated immigration department. A visa stamp is required to enter the country, without which one will not be able to enter the country.

Electronic visa

An e-Visa is a convenient way to obtain a traditional visa. Compared to traditional visas, e-visas have much shorter processing times and can be digitally generated for fast-track entry.
