These 3 Schengen countries will see the most visa refusals in 2021


If you are planning a trip to the European Union or the greater Schengen area in the near future and want to make an informed decision, the 2021 visa application statistics might be a good place to start. Of the 26 Schengen countries (Croatia was not yet a Schengen country at the time), 3 countries rejected the most short-term visa applications in 2021 – France, Germany and Spain.

Schengen countries with the highest number of short-stay visa rejections

France tops the list for visa refusals. Of the 652,331 applications received by its embassies in 2021, the country rejected 128,672 – just over 21%. Spain came in second, rejecting 69,863 short-stay visa applications. Germany received 346,284 applications, of which 53,987 were rejected.

While this is useful information, it may also be helpful to know which countries reject the highest percentage of applications they receive. Although Sweden received only 22,260 applications, 30% of them were rejected. Sweden is followed by Norway, France, Denmark and Belgium. In 2021, applicants applying to the embassies and consulates of these four countries are more likely to be rejected compared to other countries in the Schengen area

Luxembourg has the lowest number of visa applications rejected in 2021 (29 out of 2,383), followed by Slovakia (107 out of 3,886) and Iceland (279 out of 2,735).
