Even if you want to visit Bhutan, Australia or Egypt in 2023, if you hold a US passport, you must first obtain a visa. Some of the “Best Places to Travel 2023” list require U.S. citizens to obtain a visitor visa, which can be inconvenient when planning long-coveted foreign trips.
According to the 2023 Henley Passport Index, U.S. passport holders can travel to 186 countries around the world without a visa, ranking seventh among the “world’s strongest passports”.
The ranking is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is compiled annually to summarize the number of countries and territories passport holders can travel to without a visa.
Asian countries also occupy the top positions in the 2023 rankings. The Japanese passport allows visa-free travel to 193 countries, ranking first for the sixth year in a row. Singapore and South Korea tied for second, with access to 192 countries. Germany and Spain tied for third with access to 190 countries.
Sixteen countries rank higher than the United States, four fewer than in 2022. The United States tied for seventh place with Belgium, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland.
According to Insider, only eight of the top 50 countries offer “citizenship by investment programs.” This allows applicants to obtain a passport in exchange for an approved investment in the country.
Here are the top 10 countries with the strongest passports. The number after the country name indicates the number of regions and countries that can be traveled to.
