Taiwan cuts coronavirus-related quarantine period for arrivals to 3 days

TAIPEI, June 11 (Reuters) – Taiwan said on Saturday it would reduce mandatory quarantine days for all arrivals to three from seven days, the latest to ease rules as it tries to live with and recover from COVID-19. Normal life, even if it has been dealing with the surge of infections.

While much of the rest of Asia has eased or lifted quarantine rules, Taiwan has maintained its quarantine rules, though in May it reduced the number of quarantine days for arrivals to seven days from the previous 10 days.

Since the start of the year, Taiwan has reported more than 2.7 million domestic cases of the more contagious Omicron variant. But with more than 99 percent of people showing no or mild symptoms, the government has eased rather than tightened restrictions on what it calls the “New Taiwan Model.”

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center said new, reduced quarantine rules will be implemented from Wednesday.

It added that after leaving quarantine, people will have to continue to monitor their health for four days and avoid going out as much as possible.

The center said the move was “to promote economic and social activities and necessary international exchanges in consideration of the international and domestic epidemic situation and epidemic prevention medical capabilities.”

All arrivals will still require a negative PCR test prior to departure.

The government says the current wave of COVID-19 in the country is waning, but has yet to fully reopen borders.

Taiwanese citizens and foreign residents are never prohibited from leaving and re-entering, but must be quarantined at home or in a hotel.

Before the pandemic, Taiwan was a popular destination for mainly Asian tourists, with Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia being the most important markets.
