Taiwan cooperates with FBI to prevent human trafficking into Cambodia | Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan is cooperating with the FBI and Thailand to stop human trafficking to Cambodia and bring victims home, Taiwan’s police chief said Friday (August 19).

Forty Taiwanese victims of human trafficking have returned home from Cambodia, but 333 people still need to be rescued, the government said on Thursday (August 18).

A total of 4,679 Taiwanese citizens are believed to remain in the Southeast Asian country, but scrutiny to determine how many were victims of the fraud ring continues, National Police Agency (NPA) chief Huang Mingzhao (黄明昭) said on Friday.

In the latest example of international cooperation, Thai authorities detained 12 Taiwanese nationals who had entered from Cambodia and handed them over to Taiwan. After investigation, eight of the group turned out to be victims of scammers, while four others were suspected to be members of a fraud ring, CNA reported.

The NPA said it had increased police presence at Taiwan’s airports to warn travelers against taking potentially dangerous, high-paying jobs in the Southeast Asian country. The effort was successful in intercepting 28 people before they boarded the plane, CNA reported.
