If you’re not already familiar with the “Korean Wave,” which you’ve probably experienced through the news, social media, and even Netflix, the South Korean show “Squid Game” has become the most popular of the dozens. The show aired in more countries around the world than any English-language show, reaching 111 million viewers in less than its first month.

South Korea is a fashion destination in its own right.

Seoul, its capital and largest city, is the sixth most popular city on Instagram and the second most popular city on TikTok.

Why?

Because it’s a metropolis that isn’t as overwhelming as other big cities. Conversely, K-drama fans, followers of K-pop groups like BTS or Korean influencers can learn about the city’s pedestrian boulevards, cherry blossom-lined avenues, ancient temples and love of trendy food and cozy chic clothing. Remember Dalgona Coffee? That’s Korean!

During a very difficult two years when most people, especially the younger generation, were stuck at home and had no chance to travel, South Korea popped up on many of their social media, Netflix recommendations and Spotify playlists, providing them with New escapes to destinations they had barely known before.

This also led to more Americans starting to learn Korean.

Language-learning app Memrise has seen a 22% increase in language-learning signups in the US and 94% in the UK, and to celebrate, they’re offering a month of free Korean lessons to everyone who signs up by November 1st.

So what does this mean for Trip Advisor?

The Travel Agency Academy has launched a course to become a Korean travel expert, teaching consultants about the culture and knowledge of popular destinations such as Seoul, Jeju Island, and Busan. Benefits include the title of Korea Travel Expert, vacation invitations, free promotional materials, and more.

If you’re a travel consultant who works with many millennials or young adults, consider signing up for the Specialist program. It will get you ready for people who have just discovered South Korea’s next bucket list destination.
