South Korea cases rise at smallest in two months
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea reported the smallest daily increase in local transmission of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in two months, with health authorities expressing cautious optimism that the outbreak is being brought under control.
South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still reported 26 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Monday, 22 of which were linked to international arrivals.
The four local infections are the first time since May 19 that the number of such infections has fallen below 10, Deputy Health Minister Kim Gang-lip said at a virus briefing. He continued to call for vigilance, encouraging people to avoid crowded places or even stay at home during the summer holidays.
Officials see imported cases as less of a threat than local transmission because the country is mandating COVID-19 testing and imposing a two-week quarantine on all arrivals from abroad.
