Smartphone maker Foxconn unveils electric car for Taiwanese brand Yulon
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — The company that assembles smartphones for Apple Inc. and other global brands unveiled an electric SUV Tuesday that it will build for a Taiwanese automaker under a similar contract model.
The SUV will be sold by Yulon Motors as the Luxgen n7 starting next year, Foxconn Technology Group said. It said the five-seater should be able to travel 700 kilometers (440 miles) on a single charge. No price was announced.
Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., plans to make electric cars and buses for the brand in China, North America, Europe and other markets. It says customers can modify their appearance and features.
With nearly every established automaker and dozens of ambitious startups offering electric offerings, the venture adds to a crowded global market.
“Hon Hai is bound to redefine the electric vehicle industry,” company founder Terry Gou said in a statement.
Foxconn, headquartered in New Taipei City, Taiwan, is the world’s largest contract assembler of smartphones and other consumer electronics.
Yulon was founded in the 1940s to assemble cars for Nissan Motor Co. and other automakers. The company launched its own brand, Luxgen, in 2009.
The Luxgen n7 is one of five models recommended for potential customers.
On Tuesday, Foxconn also showed off the Model B, a five-passenger crossover, and the Model V, a five-passenger, dual-cab pickup truck.
The company previously announced plans to develop the Model T sedan and electric bus in partnership with Italian design firm Pininfarina.
