Sites in Odisha now part of treks


The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) introduces guided walking tours to heritage sites to celebrate the state’s rich culture and history

Fascinating stories of Odisha’s past will be revealed to visitors as Hindu Temple “Lingaraj”, Stupa “Shanti Stupa” and other sites in and around Bhubaneswar Now that’s part of the hike.

Hiking is typically walking to historical or cultural sites in an urban setting.

Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) Offers Guided Walking Tours ruins Celebrate Honshu’s rich culture and history.

The ‘Odisha Walks’, as its name suggests, will take enthusiasts to the 10th century Mukteswar and 11th century Lingaraj temples, Shanti Stupa, Khandagiri and Udaygiri caves. Tour guides tell stories about these places to tourists.

“These five guided tours along the identified heritage routes will help reveal the city’s rich architectural treasures, culture, traditions, rituals and customs,” said OTDC Chairman Lenin Mohanty.

Besides the famous Lingaraj and muktiswar Temple, the city’s Parasurameswar Temple built in the 7th century is also dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The Shanti Stupa or Peace Pagoda was built on the site of the Kalinga War in 261 BC, when Ashoka invaded Kalinga (present-day Odisha). In 1972, the Nippon Buddhist Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddhist Sangha built a pagoda there.

The stone carvings of the Khandagiri and Udaygiri caves were built around the 2nd century BC, 7 km from Bhubaneshwar.

Odisha Walks will be organized every Friday to Sunday morning from 6:30 to 8:30 am.

OTDC plans to add more guided walking tours like this in different areas heritage destination States and they will be planned and organized in stages.

Tourism director Sachin Ramachandra Jadhav said the initiative would not only promote heritage tourism but also educate people about the state’s rich cultural heritage.
