Singapore travel agency launches virtual tour like no other

With border restrictions keeping foreign tourists away, Singaporean operator Monster Day Tours aims to keep guided tours alive by rolling out a double-hit product aimed at the domestic market.

Singapore previously opened applications to resume small local tours, provided they meet a set of health and safety guidelines and limit their groups to five guests.

From 25 July to 31 August 2020, Monster Day Tours will be running a series of SG55 walking tours to coincide with the country’s 55th National Day. To help local guides who have lost income during the pandemic, the tours will take place at places of interest such as Chinatown, Little India and Marina Bay Sands, alongside separate food tours. Each group tour costs S$55 (US$40) for up to five guests, with all proceeds going towards the guides.

“Our guides have essentially seen their entire source of income disappear and we are concerned that many of our excellent guides are reconsidering tour guides as a viable career option. We hope this initiative will help raise awareness in the local community for them Situational awareness. Mentally, we also want to be positive about the resumption of travel and encourage guides to start honing their skills again,” said TY Suen, founder and CEO of Woopa Travels, the parent company of Monster Day Tours .

The agency is in discussions with hotels to include the trip to SG55 as part of their accommodation packages. To encourage sign-ups, the company is also offering a S$10 Grab voucher for each booking, as well as two free tickets to the new virtual bingo tour.

Launched this week, Virtual Bingo Tours are aimed at consumers looking to explore Singapore from the comfort of their homes. During these tours hosted on Zoom, participants will follow a live guide through unique parts of Singapore while playing games to win prizes.

Priced at S$10 per ticket, participants will have the chance to win various prizes, including a grand prize of S$1,000. From July 18th to 25th, the first tour of North District will be launched; the second tour will visit Gardens by the Bay, the specific date is to be determined. More attractions are in development, including Changi Airport and Shine Tours and behind-the-scenes tours.

Suen shared: “Many of the existing virtual tours we tried didn’t feel engaging enough because they were either pre-recorded or self-guided. To stay true to the ‘live’ nature of the tour, we decided to launch a new type of Gamifying travel — that’s something we’ve always wanted to do.”

While the virtual tour is primarily aimed at the local market, Monster Day Tours will also appeal to overseas markets through paid marketing, digital advertising, and the Singapore Tourism Board.
