Singapore-Hong Kong travel bubble hangs in obscurity again?

On May 4, 2021, Singapore announced plans to implement stricter travel restrictions and 21-day quarantine measures following a surge in local COVID-19 cases. The move raised questions about the Hong Kong-Singapore travel bubble, suggesting travel conditions between the two cities could change.

At a multi-ministerial press conference on COVID-19 on May 4, 2021, Education Minister Huang Xuncai answered reporters’ questions about the Hong Kong-Singapore travel corridor, saying the two cities remained connected. However, the government will assess whether changes to quarantine-free travel with Hong Kong are needed.

“We will monitor the situation and we will review and assess if there are any changes and provide updates in due course,” Huang said.

On April 26, 2021, Hong Kong and Singapore agreed on a launch date for the long-awaited air travel bubble. Quarantine-free travel between the two business and financial hubs in Asia is scheduled to begin on May 26, 2021. This is the second attempt to start the bubble, after the first attempt on November 22, 2020 did not help.

Singapore’s move has so far had no official impact on the travel bubble with Hong Kong scheduled to begin on May 26, 2021, as both cities have clear thresholds for the number of associated COVID-19 cases before the corridor is suspended.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), quarantine-free travel between Hong Kong and Singapore will be suspended for two weeks if the seven-day moving average of the number of daily local cases in Hong Kong and Singapore exceeds five. .

If there are no changes to quarantine-free travel, Bubble flights will only be operated by Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines (SIA1) (SINGY). Cathay Pacific’s operations to Singapore will use Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Cathay Pacific said the first CX759 flight from Hong Kong will take off on May 26, 2021, while the first CX734 flight from Singapore will take off on May 27, 2021. All flights to Singapore will be carried out by vaccinated pilots and crew.
