Singapore will lift some entry requirements for vaccinated travellers in the coming weeks after two years of strict border restrictions and repeated cancellations of reopening.
This update will be February 22as travelers arriving from a vaccinated travel lane (VTL) will no longer be required to undergo expensive PCR tests on arrival.
The following is the latest travel news in Singapore, The Ministry of Health announced last week:
- PCR tests required for those VTL arriving in Singapore will be updated to self-test, Rapid Antigen Test on Arrival.
- From February 25, Singapore will expand quarantine-free travel from the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia by adding them to the VTL scheme. After March 4, fully vaccinated travelers can also visit on VTL flights from Israel and the Philippines.
- Singapore is seeking to expand quarantine-free travel for all fully vaccinated arrivals.
Singapore updates entry restrictions for vaccinated travellers
If you plan to visit this Southeast Asian country this year, know that travelers from one of the countries on the Singapore vaccination travel itinerary list can apply for a leisure visit. The VTL list includes the US, Canada and the UK. This is the latest entry requirement for travellers. All changes will take effect on February 21st at 23:59 pm local time.
- One PCR testing is no longer required upon entry. This is good news for travelers as the PCR test on arrival costs SGD 125 (~USD 100). Instead, travelers will have to undergo a rapid antigen test. A self-swab test on arrival costs SGD 15 (USD 11) and must be done within 24 hours of arrival.
- Still need pre-trip testing: Travellers must present a negative Covid PCR test or a rapid antigen test from two day trip to singapore.
- Fully vaccinated travelers will no longer need to be tested on Days 2 and 7 if arriving via VTL flights.
- fully inoculated recovered traveller Testing requirements may be allowed to be skipped entirely. See full details here.
- To arrive in Singapore on a VTL flight, passengers must have stayed only in other countries on the approved VTL list in the past 14 days. This means that departures from the US, Canada and the UK are fine, but if you have travelled in a non-VTL country sometime in the 14 days prior to arrival, you will not be allowed to travel to Singapore. This window will now be reduced to 7 days.
- Travellers must still purchase travel medical insurance of at least S$30,000 for their trip.
- While it doesn’t take the full two weeks, travelers will still have to self-isolate in their booked accommodation until they test negative for Covid-19.
- Those travellers who need to self-isolate cannot take any form of public transport in Singapore until they test negative and no longer need to self-isolate.
Singapore wants to approve all vaccinated travellers after Omicron Wave
During a virtual press conference last week, some Singaporean health officials mentioned that the goal is to have the city-state Reopens to all fully vaccinated travelers. Singapore Health Minister Kang Yiye issued the following statement on the matter:
“We should actually allow SHN-free travel for fully vaccinated travelers from all countries, rather than establishing vaccinated travel routes or VTLs in selected countries where we believe the risk is low. We shouldn’t be Make this transition, but after the Omicron wave peaks and starts to subside.”
Quarantine-Free Travel Channels Closed in Omicron Wave
After launching the VTL program with just a handful of countries in August, Singapore expanded the program to include travelers from the U.S., Canada and many European destinations in late October. While travellers are still required to be tested daily, this is the first time foreign travellers have come to Singapore for leisure purposes since international borders were closed in March 2020.
However, in late December, Singapore closed quarantine-free travel in the Omicron wave and imposed new travel restrictions until 20 January 2022. Singapore also froze all new flight and bus ticket sales for a month from December 23 until January 20. After January 20th, they get 50% of their new purchase quota.
Vaccination travel routes expanded to include UAE and Philippines
In other news, Singapore will expand its VTL flight network with more countries as 2022 progresses.
From 25 February, approved flights will operate between Singapore and Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar.
Israel and the Philippines will join the list on March 4.
