Sergey Lavrov opens Russian consulate in Phuket

Phuket: Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov officially inaugurated the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Phuket yesterday (July 15) at the Royal Phuket Marina.

At 4pm, Mr. Lavrov was welcomed by the Deputy Governor of Phuket, Amnuay Pinsuwan, accompanied by Evgeny Tomikhin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Thailand.

Welcome delegation led by Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai This is Mamani. Director of the European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Colonel Jirasak Siemsak, Deputy Commander of the Phuket Provincial Police; and Gulu Lalvani, CEO and Founder of Royal Phuket Marina.

Also in attendance at the event was a small gathering of key government officials, members of the private sector in Phuket and members of the Russian community in Phuket.

Today’s event adds a glorious page to the 126-year history of our diplomatic relations. Lavrov said, “Currently, it is difficult for us to lay a solid foundation for Russia-Thailand relations, so that we can cooperate reliably in a mutually respectful manner, regardless of fluctuations in the geopolitical environment.”

“Active political dialogue, trade and economic cooperation, cultural and educational exchanges with our Thai partners. Let us not forget that one of the key tasks of diplomacy is to protect the rights and legitimate interests of Russian citizens abroad.”

“Thailand is known to be one of the favorite holiday destinations for Russians. Even if you stay here for a short time, you will realize that there is a reason why Phuket is not so popular – beautiful nature, warm climate (including the rainy season, which I also like), cheerful people. After the resumption of direct flights, the flow of Russian tourists to Thailand has increased significantly. Since October 2022, more than 1 million Russian citizens have visited Thailand, half of them in Holidays in Phuket… I believe these numbers will only grow in the future.

“Today, Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai spoke with my colleagues about the steps that must be taken so that the cards of the Russian payment system “World” can be used here without problems. The increase provides additional power.

“Phuket is a famous resort, but the work of Russian diplomats here will be tense. They will assume direct consular functions related to ensuring the interests of Russian citizens in Phuket, business ties and promoting regional cooperation between Thailand and Russia. Recent tasks One is the establishment of fraternal links between Phuket and the Kamchatka Krai.

Today’s opening ceremony of the Russian Consulate General in Phuket is an important step in expanding Russia’s diplomatic presence in Southeast Asia, but it will not be the last. We plan to open more diplomatic missions in other friendly countries of the region,” concluded Lavrov.
