Russian tourist killed, another injured in motorcycle accident in Phuket
PHUKET: A Russian tourist was killed and his younger brother was injured yesterday (April 8) when his scooter crashed on a rural road in central Phuket. The incident brings the road death toll in Phuket by 2023 to 38.
Lt Col Yuthaphol Wattaset of Thalang Police was notified of a traffic accident in Pa Khlok at around 4.30am yesterday (April 8). According to reports, a motorcycle carrying two foreigners flew off a local road and crashed on the spot, killing the driver on the spot.
Upon arriving at the scene, police and rescue workers found a blue Honda Click scooter and the body of 36-year-old Maksim Fadeev nearby in the grass on the side of the road. The man was wearing an open-face crash helmet, but in photos provided by police it is clearly seen that his forehead was injured and the helmet was not protecting him.
Also at the scene was Andrei Fadeev, 32, Maxim’s brother and passenger at the time of the crash. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Nothing was reported about his condition, but at least he was conscious and able to communicate with police and rescue workers. The Russian embassy in Thailand has been notified in due course.
According to preliminary investigations, the Fadeevs arrived in Phuket on April 5 and planned to leave on April 15. The Russian brothers, who were born in Kazakhstan, live in a hotel in Patong and own a Honda Click scooter for sightseeing.
On the day of the incident, tourists went to visit the Bang Pei Waterfall in Baquero. Police believe the driver, Maksim Fadeev, simply failed to drive on unfamiliar roads.
