FOOTBALL: A four-team football tournament featuring one of the country’s major professional teams will be played at the Surakul Stadium this weekend, officials announced yesterday (July 13).
The pre-season game is hosted by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) Phuket Office and the Phuket Sports Association, named “Phuket Andaman Pre-season Sports City”, and will run from today (July 14) to Sunday (July 16) ).
The main attraction is Bangkok-based Police Tero Football Club, who play in the Thai First Division and were runners-up in the inaugural AFC Champions League in 2003.
They are joined by Thai League 2’s Nakhon Si United FC, Muang Trang United and local side Phuket Andaman FC, who all play in the Thai League 3 Southern Region.
The tournament was officially announced yesterday at a press conference at Central Floresta, Kathu, chaired by Thammawat Wongcharoenyot, Chairman of the Phuket Sports Association, at 5pm.
He was joined by: Thanya Wongnak, Manager of Tro Police Football Team; Dr. Sakhayot Sangkhapan, Technical Director of Muang Trang United; Tatthep Boriboon, Head Coach of Muang Trang United; and Pisut Boonkoy, Manager of Phuket Andaman Football Club.
Mr Tamawat explained that the purpose of organizing the tournament was to build relationships between the four clubs and players, and it was also a great opportunity for the teams to prepare for the new season, which begins in September.
It also provides an exciting spectacle for viewers while touting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and positioning Phuket as a “sports city”, he added.
Fans are encouraged to come and cheer on the team at the Surakul Stadium throughout the weekend. Tickets cost B100 and students and youth under 15 enter free.
