Philippine Airlines to buy nine A350-1000s for ultra-long-range fleet

The new aircraft will join two A350-900s already in service, currently flying to destinations in North America, Asia and Australia

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for the purchase of nine A350-1000s. Under Philippine Airlines’ ultra-long-haul fleet project, the A350-1000 will operate non-stop flights from Manila to North America, including the US East Coast and Canada.

The new aircraft will join the airline’s two A350-900s already in service, currently flying to destinations in North America, Asia and Australia. Like the A350-900, the PAL A350-1000 will be configured in a premium layout with separate business, premium economy and economy classes.

Captain Stanley K. Ng, President and Chief Operating Officer of Philippine Airlines, said the A350-1000’s range will allow the airline to fly year-round across the Pacific and transpolar routes. These will include some of the longest commercial flights in the world, such as those linking the Philippines with New York and Toronto. With the expansion of the A350 fleet, PAL will once again be able to offer non-stop flights from the Philippines to Europe.

“The A350-1000 combines greater range capability with the higher capacity we need to meet future demands. It is the perfect aircraft for Philippine Airlines to meet its expansion plans in a sustainable manner while providing passengers with the highest level of in-flight comfort We are committed to giving our passengers the best travel experience possible, and these state-of-the-art aircraft will allow us to achieve that goal while fulfilling our mission of connecting the world and growing trade and tourism.”

Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer, said: “The A350 gives passengers the experience of flying farther and in greater comfort, it brings a huge change in fuel efficiency and contributes to reducing emissions. These features make the A350 the choice of leading airlines around the world. We look forward to working closely with our long-term customer Philippine Airlines as it advances its long-haul fleet modernization plan.”

The A350 is the most modern and efficient wide-body aircraft in the world, setting a new standard for intercontinental travel. It has the longest range capability of any commercial airliner in production today, capable of nonstop flight of 8,700 nautical miles or 16,100 kilometers.

As of the end of April 2023, the A350 family had won 928 firm orders from 54 customers around the world, making it one of the most successful wide-body aircraft ever built. Currently, 40 airlines operate a fleet of approximately 530 aircraft, mainly on long-haul routes.

Philippine Airlines operates a variety of Airbus models on its full-service network. In addition to using the A350 on long-haul intercontinental routes, PAL also flies the A330-300 to various locations in the Middle East, Australia and Asia. The Philippine flag carrier also operates a fleet of A320 and A321 single-aisle aircraft on its extensive domestic and regional network with hubs in Manila and Cebu.
