Myanmar People’s Defense War: Official Declaration

Diplomatic efforts to end a military takeover and unrest in Myanmar (Myanmar) have failed despite sanctions from Western countries and pressure from neighbors in Southeast Asia.
Today, the Myanmar Government of National Unity declared a “people’s defense war”.

  • On Tuesday morning, Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) declared a nationwide people’s defense war against the military junta.
  • NUG acting president Duwarashla called on citizens across the country to “resist the rule of military terrorists led by (coup leader) Min Aung Hlaing across the country”.
  • He declared a state of emergency in the country to root out the military dictatorship.

Myanmar’s shadow government has declared a “people’s defense war” against the country’s army, which seized power in a coup on February 1.

The acting president of the National Unity Government (NUG), which is made up of ousted lawmakers, Dua Lashra, made the announcement in a video posted on Facebook on Tuesday.

He declared a state of emergency in the country to root out the military dictatorship.

He called military leaders terrorists when he mobilized the People’s Defense Forces.

The government of national unity shoulders the responsibility to protect the lives and property of the people … launched a people’s defense war against the military government,” he said.

“Because this is a public revolution, all citizens of Myanmar are fighting against the rule of military terrorists led by Min Aung Hlaing across the country.”

Since General Ming Aung Lai launched a coup, the situation in Myanmar has been turbulent. The power grab sparked widespread protests and a civil disobedience movement, but security forces crushed it with brutal force, killing hundreds and arresting thousands more.
