The volcano spewed fiery ash and pyroclastic flows on Wednesday night. It includes lava, rock and gas. This caused huge problems and threats as it traveled up to 5 kilometers up the slope. Lava at Mount Merapi was listed as the highest hazard level and was raised in November 2020.
“Dozens of minor eruptions continued during the day Thursday, sending rivers of lava and clouds of scorching gas down 2.5 kilometers down the slopes. No casualties were reported. Some 253 people were evacuated to temporary shelters but returned to the fertile slopes of the volcano after the event was over subsided,” said Hanik Humaida, director of the Volcanology and Geohazard Mitigation Center in Yogyakarta.
