A street runs through the center of the UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang Old Town, lined with temples, palaces, French colonial buildings, restaurants and cafes. Sisavangvong Road becomes Sakkaline Road until it intersects with Riverview Park near the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. If you decide to take part in just one cultural event, be sure to get up early for the morning alms procession unique to Luang Prabang. Every morning, in the predawn sun, dozens of Buddhist monks — young and old, all dressed in colorful saffron robes — fan out from the temples scattered around town, silently hearing from volunteer tourists and locals alike. There to collect sticky rice, candy and cash gifts.


The streets of Luang Prabang are almost full of Buddhist temples. In the old town, they are even placed side by side. Wat Pa Phai is considered one of the oldest monasteries, while Wat Xiengthong is considered by some to be the most beautiful in Laos. After climbing the 328 steps, climb to the top of Phoussi Hill to find Wat Chomsi, from which you can enjoy sweeping views over the city and the Mekong River. Especially popular at sunset. As this is a sacred religious site, visitors must dress conservatively.


In 2017, an Australian couple opened Laos’ first (and only) buffalo dairy on the outskirts of Luang Prabang. The dairy produces cheese, yoghurt and ice cream on-site, using a business model that helps boost the bank accounts of local farmers. Ice cream has become a favorite with visitors to the area—it’s a popular stopover on the way to and from Kansai Falls—and a dedicated canteen has been set up on the road in front of the farm, serving ice cream in cups.
