Lotte Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Eiichi Gotsu), Can Tho University (Vietnam), Nippon Hydropowtech Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Masazumi Kumasawa), Takesho Co., Ltd. (President and Chief Executive Executive: Masazumi Kumasawa) Toshinao Tanaka of Take Show Food Vietnam (President: Noriyasu Onoma) launched a joint research project on May 24, 2023 to verify the effectiveness of cocoa pods as a soil conditioner.

■Research background
Cocoa beans are extracted from cocoa pods, fermented and dried for use as an ingredient in chocolate. The shells of cocoa pods, which make up about 80% of the total weight of cocoa beans, are discarded unused on cocoa farms. It takes time for discarded cocoa pods to get back into the soil, and if the fungus multiplies in the cocoa pods, the pathogenic bacteria can spread to the cocoa trees, resulting in lower cocoa fruit yields and less income for cocoa farmers. It would therefore be desirable to process the cocoa pods in a proper manner It is also used industrially in cocoa producing areas.
In this joint study, we will verify whether it is possible to improve the fertility of agricultural land by sterilizing and pulverizing cocoa beans using hydrolysis technology and applying it to soils in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. Through this research, we aim to solve environmental problems in cocoa producing areas and realize a resource recycling society.
