This guide sets out basic information for British nationals living in Mongolia, including advice on health, education, welfare, residency requirements and more. We are unable to provide any guidance on general lifestyle inquiries other than the information and links listed below. See our information on what embassies can and cannot do for UK nationals. This information supplements the travel advice for Mongolia.

healthy

It is highly recommended that you purchase comprehensive medical insurance before traveling to Mongolia. You must pay for medical treatment received in Mongolia. Medical bills can be expensive. Insurance is essential, so make sure to purchase comprehensive travel insurance before your trip. Make sure your policy states the following:

  • Air ambulance in case you need to fly home
  • Full medical insurance (bills can be very expensive)
  • bring the dead body home in case of death
  • Bring your family home if you are sick or injured

If you need urgent medical assistance, call 103 for an ambulance.

Call the police Dial 102 for emergencies and 101 for fire services.

The Mongolian government provides 12 years of free primary and lower secondary education to all children attending public schools and kindergartens. The Ministry of Education provides information on education policies and services in Mongolia.

Entry and Residence Requirements

All UK passport holders require a visa to enter Mongolia. You will need to contact the nearest Mongolian embassy to confirm the visa requirements for your visit. A Mongolia visit visa is valid for a maximum stay of 30 days within six months from the date of issue. If you stay longer than 90 days, you must register your length of stay with the Mongolian Immigration Office in Ulaanbaatar within 21 days of your arrival. Once registered, you will be issued a residence permit. The permit will include your date of birth, passport number, address, photograph and fingerprints. You should take it with you when you are in Mongolia.

Employment and Accreditation Qualifications

If you intend to work in Mongolia, your employer will be responsible for your Mongolian visa. If you are interested in teaching English, most schools/universities in Mongolia require a Teaching English Language Qualification (TESOL) or an equivalent recognized qualification.

While living abroad, you may be entitled to some UK benefits and state pensions. If you are moving to Mongolia, you should inform the relevant UK government office dealing with your benefits, pensions and taxes that you are moving abroad or retiring.

Driver’s License and Vehicle

To drive in Mongolia, you need a Mongolian driver’s license. Please visit the Traffic Police website for more information.

A Guide to Bringing Medicines into Mongolia

You can only bring medicines into Mongolia for personal use. These include emergency aid medicines for up to 7 days, or medicines you have been prescribed by your doctor to treat diabetes, cancer, mental illness, or HIV/AIDS. If you arrive by air, you should take all medications in your checked baggage.

Possession and use of any type of drug, including marijuana, is illegal. If found guilty, you could face long prison terms in very poorly equipped institutions. Please refer to the local laws and customs section of the travel advice.

leave mongolia

Visitors staying in Mongolia for more than 90 days must obtain an exit visa to leave the country. The exit visa is obtained from the Mongolian Immigration Office and usually takes 10 days to process. Visitors to Mongolia for less than 90 days do not need an exit visa. However, requests to leave Mongolia may be denied for reasons such as civil disputes, pending criminal investigations, or violations of immigration regulations.
