Lifting of restrictions pushes up travel demand in Singapore | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Demand for travel from Kolkata to Singapore has surged after switching from bubble flights to scheduled commercial services. This shift has resulted in the removal of several restrictions such as the purchase of Vaccination Travel Passes (VTP) in addition to visas and quarantine for passengers arriving on non-vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) flights.
“From an occupancy rate of 30%-35% in early March, SIA’s daily flights are now at 70%-80% load. Buoyed by demand, IndiGo Airlines has applied to fly to Singapore daily from mid-April flights,” an airline official said. Singapore Airlines operates an Airbus A 350-900 aircraft with 150 economy class seats and 10 business class seats.
Singapore Airlines resumed daily flights from 29 November 2019 and was one of the first airlines to return to Kolkata. While flights to Kolkata initially recorded good loads, with people living there finally having the opportunity to travel, return flights underperformed as a number of conditions came into effect, including travel passes and quarantine requirements on arrival.
“Until March, Singapore Airlines was not operating a VTL flight from Kolkata. This resulted in passengers traveling to Delhi taking Singapore Airlines’ VTL flight as it exempted them from the quarantine they had to undergo upon arrival in Singapore. Therefore, from Kolkata The flight took off with hardly any load,” recalls travel agent Manav Soni.
More than two years later, that changed with the resumption of scheduled flights on April 1. Passengers are now free to travel without the hassle of obtaining travel passes. “Flying to Singapore now only requires an RT-PCR test and vaccination certificate 48 hours before travelling. With Singapore now issuing two-year multiple-entry e-visas, it is also becoming a popular destination for leisure travelers like Thailand,” Soni added.
