Setagaya Firefly Festival and Sagizen Market in Tokyo, Japan

Organized by the Setagaya Ward Government, the Setagaya Ward Firefly Festival is a worthy addition to your Japan travel bucket list. Held annually on July 15th and 16th, it will return this year. Thousands of fireflies illuminate the old Edo-style Odaga mansion, attracting tourists and nature lovers from all over the world. With Sagittarius in full bloom, live music, food stalls and crafts for sale, you can experience Japanese culture while enjoying the pleasant atmosphere created by fireflies. Admission to this event is free.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina, Tennessee, USA

Located on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to a rare and radiant glowworm species known as the synchronous glowworm. As mating season begins in late May, male and female fireflies flash their lights in sync to find their mates. By the second week of June, the trees in the park will be dancing in the light of these fireflies. Reservations to visit national parks are made through Recreation.gov, which is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. The high demand to visit this place has led to the application of a lottery system to select tourists.

Pennsylvania Firefly Festival, Kellyville, Pennsylvania, USA

The Pennsylvania Firefly Festival, Inc. is a nonprofit organization created to raise awareness and educate people about fireflies. The organization hosts firefly-themed events throughout the year.As part of this, the annual 30-day PA Firefly Festivalday June 1Yingshi July is all about celebrating the magnificence of fireflies. The festival is held in the Allegheny National Forest, home to the Synchronized Glowworm and the Chinese Lantern Glowfly. Firefly experts provide guidance throughout the tour, while visitors can witness firefly mating displays. Bookings for the festival are made through the organization’s official website and visitors are selected through a lottery process.
