Kampot’s new tourist drive

To boost domestic tourism, three communities in Kampot and a local tourism company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to entice holidaymakers to experience the delights of their province through specially designed packages.

The MoU was signed by Om Pharin, chairman and CEO of Charming Cambodia Tours, with representatives from La Plantation, a pepper farm in Kampot province, the Trapaing Sangke tourist community, and the Natural Salt Production Association.

Kampot Provincial Tourism Director Soy Sinol told khmer times The MoU will boost domestic tourists to visit Kampot province. He added that currently the arrangement of local tour packages in Cambodia seems to be unpopular compared with international tourists, but this MoU will raise awareness of the consideration and use of local tour packages and attract more tour companies to participate to help Enhance the status of the region as a tourist destination.

“This is to attract more tourists to Kampot. It is very important for the local community to gain experience in hosting tourists. It is driving a strong domestic tourism movement to boost the domestic economy,” he added.

Kampot has four main tourist destinations to attract tourists, he said. Among them: rural experience east of Kampot town with its salt and pepper farms, temples, Saru crane bird area, Kampung Chak cave; Kampot heritage and its museums, old town, night market and food street; The boat sees people’s life along the Prek Toek Chhou River; Bokor National Park.

Kampot has 21 hotels and about 300 guesthouses and bungalows with 4,000 rooms, as well as more than 200 restaurants and other service facilities.

“The tourism department of Kampot Province will work with the private sector to select more tourist communities as part of the tourism package because it has the potential to attract more tourists,” Sinol added.

Om Pharin said the collaboration will contribute to the development of the three communities and will improve income and livelihoods in the region. “We will continue to develop new and more unique tour packages to increase the number of tourists visiting these regions,” he said. It is not only a tourist attraction but also has high real estate investment potential. In fact, Forest Harmony developers are developing 90 villas on 13 hectares – some worth millions of dollars.

He said that the Forest Harmony Project has beautiful mountain and forest scenery, which attracts local people and people from Asia and Europe to visit and visit frequently.

Sinol added that tour packages vary by location, number of people, accommodation and food, but range from an average of $39 to $100 per trip per person. He said the company was only open on weekends. So far, it attracts 80 to 100 people a week to Kampot. “It’s a good start, and we should encourage it,” Sinol said.

Kampot received 838,000 local and international tourists in the first six months of 2020, compared to 1,090,000 in the first six months of 2019, Sinol added. The drop was due to no tourists from mid-March to April 17 when the government closed provincial borders to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
