Japan retains sixth position in 2023 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI)

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – Media OutReach – 25th July 2023 – Japan maintained its sixth position out of 138 countries in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2023 at the recent Halal Tourism Global Summit 2023 held in Singapore on 1st June 2023. The summit brought together tourism industry stakeholders and various national tourism organizations to discuss opportunities in the global Muslim tourism market.

Hida Takayama Muslim Friendship Project

Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture, with a population of just 80,000 and attracting more than 35,000 tourists from Malaysia and Indonesia, is working to provide Muslim visitors with comfortable travel, clearer information on Muslim-friendly restaurants and the availability of prayer spaces through Muslim-friendly programs and travel guides. A popular destination in the area is the picturesque town of Hida-Furukawa, where the animated film Your Name or Your Name was filmed. Experience Halal Kobe Beef in Kobe, Japan

The city of Kobe, home to the oldest surviving mosque in Japan, is just 20 minutes by train from Osaka. Built in 1935, the Kobe Mosque survived the 1945 air raid and the 1995 earthquake. The city is also popular during cherry blossom season, with Ikuta River Park and Sumaura Park attracting local and international tourists. Kobe offers a variety of Muslim-friendly facilities, as well as an authentic teppanyaki dining experience using halal-certified meat, so Muslim diners can enjoy the cuisine with confidence.

More counties are improving Muslim-friendly websites and visitor guides

Shizuoka Prefecture is known for its food, and to reassure Muslim travelers, they have updated their portal to share information about Muslim-friendly restaurants, grocery stores, and other relevant facilities.
