Pune: Union Minister JasaktiGajendra Singh Shekawatspeaking at an event in the city, highlighted the need to give back to the rivers, which have always been synonymous with civilization, and to help restore them for our children and grandchildren.
On Monday, he was speaking at the inauguration of the Initiative to Drive Integral Action on Urban Rivers (DHARA 2023) organized by the National Mission to Clean the Ganges (NMCG) and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA).
“River rehabilitation is a major area we are working on and the efforts of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are commendable. We have made significant progress such as overcoming and resolving land allocation issues for 11 sewage treatment plants,” Shekhawat said.
The River Revitalization Project aims to clean up the Mula, Mutha and Mula-Mutha (the confluence of two rivers) rivers. Therefore, it will improve water quality by supplementing the sewage collection system. The project will include 55 kilometers of mains and 11 new sewage treatment plants with a capacity of 396 million liters per day.
“After the groundbreaking of the project last year, six bids were received and work orders have now been placed. We are working towards our goal of restoring these rivers for the historic city of Pune in a sustainable and timely manner. We plan to The project will be completed by March,” Shekhawat said.
He added that the PMC aims to ensure that processing parameters for exports are in line with the Central Pollution Control Board’s specifications.
It is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), while the National River Conservation Agency (NRCD) has provided a grant to PMC. The total cost of the project is 14.74 billion rupees, of which 117.4 billion rupees is capital expenditure and 3 billion rupees is the operation and maintenance cost of the whole project within 15 years after commissioning.
At the opening ceremony of DHARA 2023, a total of 12 cities joined the River Cities Alliance (RCA). Nashik and Nand Waggala People from Maharashtra are part of these 12 cities.

The opening ceremony also saw the launch of the Ayodhya and Aurangabad Urban River Management Plan and an outline called the ’75 Rivers Initiative’.
