SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — At least 14 people were killed Monday when a tourist bus crashed into a billboard on a highway on Indonesia’s main Java island, and an apparently drowsy driver slammed into it , and 19 others were injured.

The East Java provincial traffic police said the bus carrying Indonesian tourists from Surabaya, the capital of East Java, was returning from a trip to Central Java’s Dieng Plateau, a popular mountain resort, when it hit a road on the Mojokerto toll road. Billboard chief Latif Usman said.

Television news showed police and medics pulling the injured from the bus, which crashed just 400 meters from the highway exit.

Usman said police were still investigating the cause of the crash, but the driver reportedly appeared to be drowsy before the crash.

He said police had not yet questioned the seriously injured driver. A total of 19 people were treated at four hospitals in Mojokerto, mainly for broken bones.

Road accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor safety standards and infrastructure.
