Indian state governments propose deployment of tourist police

Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh The governments of , Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have deployed the Tourist Police (PTI) in one form or another, citing the Ministry of Tourism.

While crime prevention, including crime against tourists, is the state government’s primary responsibility, the ministry is concerned about the negative impact of crime on the tourism industry.

Central Financial Assistance has provided funds to Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh for pilot establishment of travel facilitation and safety organisations.

The official said guidelines for adopting a code of conduct for safe and honorable tourism have been issued to hotels, tour guides, travel agencies, and other tourism-related professionals and institutions.

We have written to all Chief Ministers of the States and Union Territories requesting immediate and effective measures to ensure a conducive and welcoming environment for all visitors and asking them to publicize the measures they have taken to increase the sense of safety of potential visitors and to counter negative publicity.
