India Vacation Travel Insurance (2023)

Cancellation of coverage for any reason

Most travel insurance providers offer cancellation for any reason (CFAR) coverage, which covers non-refundable travel expenses but does not limit the reasons you need to cancel.

Standard travel insurance coverage includes cancellation for pre-determined reasons, including death of a family member or personal accident or illness. But CFAR coverage allows you to cancel the plan for reasons not covered by the policy. So if you cancel your trip to India and go to Canada or Thailand instead, your insurance company is more likely to reimburse you for the trip if you have CFAR coverage.

CFAR is governed by different rules for different travel insurance providers. Rules may include exclusions and time limits, such as requiring cancellations within 48 or 72 hours of the holiday start date. It is usually offered as an add-on policy, which may increase your premiums.

Gear Theft Protection

Travel insurance also covers valuables and expensive equipment, so you can travel to India with added peace of mind. Gear theft protection is useful if you are traveling with valuables such as:

  • laptop
  • smart phone
  • Professional Camera and Video Equipment
  • jewelry
  • Adventure Sports Gear

Review your international travel insurance plan for inclusions, exclusions, and coverage amounts. Some travel policies may not cover everything, such as the full cost of stolen valuables after the deductible. Typically, reimbursement covers items damaged, lost or stolen through a common carrier such as an airline or travel agency. Many travelers leave items at home or lock them in hotel rooms if they are too valuable to lose.

Emergency Medical Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

According to the U.S. State Department, the quality of healthcare in India varies depending on where you live. Finding medical care may be easier in densely populated cities than in rural areas. But no matter where you are, travel medical insurance can cover health emergencies and help you avoid huge medical bills.

Policies may vary regarding coverage for pre-existing illnesses or medical conditions. Standard medical insurance usually includes:

  • hospital expenses
  • Operating theater fees and anesthesia
  • ambulance
  • dental emergency
  • Lab Tests and X-rays
  • accidental death and dismemberment

Most travel health insurance plans cover emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if local medical care is not available or if you need to fly back to your home country.

Car Rental Protection

Due to the traffic situation, many people choose to explore India with a guide or private driver, especially in the big cities. The state requires car rental companies to provide third-party personal liability insurance to protect against death, injury or property damage that occurs while using a rental vehicle. However, the company may offer you the option to purchase additional rental car insurance.

Depending on the type of auto insurance and coverage you choose, premium plans may include the following:

  • Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection
  • Tire and Windshield Protection
  • roadside protection
  • Personal Effects Insurance

As a separate safeguard, standard travel insurance policies often include rental vehicle coverage to compensate you for a stolen or damaged car. Some policies may offer this coverage as an add-on at an additional cost.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance covers non-refundable travel expenses (such as your flight or hotel) if your trip to India is canceled unexpectedly. Coverage is extended to the insured or policyholder for limited reasons, including:

  • death of a family member
  • hospitalization or serious illness
  • Adverse weather conditions prevent departure
  • jury or military duty
  • Domestic or international terrorism (such as hijacking by air or sea)

Choose CFAR coverage for more general cancellations, such as a sympathy visit to a hospitalized person, concerns about a pre-existing condition, or simply a change of mind. Note that if you are traveling after a known event, your policy may not cover cancellations due to certain natural disasters, such as flash floods in India.
