Hotels in Indonesia: Best Hotels in the World 2020
This year’s World’s Best Awards survey concluded on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope this year’s winners inspire your future travels — no matter the time of day.
Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, is one of Asia’s most culturally and geographically diverse countries, making it a major tourist destination for decades. Many tourists look for the country’s lush mountains and white-sand beaches with one other thing in mind: rest and relaxation.
Every year, in our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to rate travel experiences around the globe, sharing their thoughts on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruises, spas, airlines and more view. Hotels are rated on amenities, location, service, food and overall value. Properties are classified as cities or resorts based on their location and amenities.

Four of the hotels on this year’s list of Indonesia’s best resorts are located in the country’s undisputed tourism capital: Bali. The island between Java and Lombok is known for its stunning scenery, ancient temples and world-class resorts. One of these is the Belmond Jimbaran Puri, which made the list for the first time this year at number three. The 64 suites and villas are located on the beach just outside the fishing village of Jimbaran on the north side of Bali’s Bukit peninsula. One voter called it the “perfect place” for a honeymoon.
One of the top resorts is a little out of the way, though. This year’s fifth-ranked Nihi Sumba is located southeast of Sumba, a 90-minute drive from anything special. The isolation is part of the reason readers love it, and readers have voted the hotel the best in the world every year since it opened in 2015: one called it “the best place on earth” while another called it the best hotel in the world. For a long round-the-world trip, name it “The Most Luxurious Wild Experience I’ve Traveled All Year!”
The top-ranked resort was also voted #1 in Asia — and #1 hotel by T+L readers in the world. In fact, the top five resorts in Indonesia feature on both lists. Read on to plan your next trip to Indonesia.

Capella Ubud has taken a coveted spot on T+L’s It List and received near-perfect scores from readers, topping the list this year. More than just a list of the best resorts in Indonesia. It’s also the best escape in Asia, and the world, readers say. It’s just that special. A line like this popped up over and over in voter comments: Unique, amazing and the best. Opened in 2018, the Bill Bensley-designed tented camp is Singaporean hotel brand Capella’s fifth property, offering 22 villas in the wilderness outside Ubud. Each treehouse-style suite features locally made textiles and teak doors, a private saltwater plunge pool and views of the meandering river and rice terraces. The effect is like a tranquil rainforest retreat – just minutes from the island’s cultural capital, Ubud. One reader summed it up in Indonesian: “Very satisfied,” or very satisfied.
