Greece is the top choice for Australian travelers
Australians are now more keen than ever to travel to Greece, news.com.au reports. Bookings for Athens have grown by 369.5%, Webjet revealed, with the Greek capital the most searched international travel destination between June 1 and August 1 this year, climbing sharply from ninth place in 2022.
It also became the fourth most popular destination booked by 18-25 year olds during the same month.
Meanwhile, Greece dominates TikTok travel wishlists, with #greekislands and #santorini combined to reach 12 million views in Australia over the past four months.
“Greece seems to cast a unique spell on Australians during the European summer,”
Webjet OTA CEO David Galt told news.com.au.
“Australians choose to take off closer to home over Easter, with Bali, Auckland and Christchurch emerging as the top international travel destinations for 2023.
“But now, with its glistening blue waters and sunshine, Greece has jumped into the top three of the EU’s top three international destinations for summer.”
While Greece has been a popular destination for Australians this season, becoming the ninth most searched international destination at the same time last year, Webjet bookings have surged by 369.5 per cent compared to 2022.
“There could be a number of factors at play, including a rise in leisure travel as opposed to post-Covid VRF (visiting family and friends) travel,” Mr Galt said.
“But anyone who finds themselves on TikTok will have a hard time missing the millions of views on videos related to travel in Greece, especially around islands like Santorini.”
The destination has also proven particularly popular with younger audiences, with Athens the fourth most booked international destination for this year’s EU summer among 18- to 25-year-olds.
“It’s no surprise when you see the itineraries on TikTok that are filled with culture, beaches and stunning views,” Mr Galt told news.com.au.
