NOTE: All border measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have been lifted April 29, 2023.
Travelers entering Japan on or after April 29, 2023 do not need to present proof of a valid vaccination or negative Covid-19 test.

Information about entering Japan

1. Refusal of entry

The denial of landing for all countries was lifted on September 4, 2022.

2. Denial of re-entry from certain of the designated countries for special treatment in response to COVID-19 border measures

Currently, there are no country/territory objects.

3. Quarantine measures (new)

From 29 April 2023, for all travelers and returnees (NEW)

(1) Passengers and returnees are no longer required to submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours prior to departure, or proof of a valid three-dose or equivalent dose of COVID-19 vaccination.
(2) Measures currently in place, including ad-hoc random sampling testing of all passengers and returnees arriving on direct flights from China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau), will be replaced by testing only those arriving with symptoms of COVID-19 Time detection (a This measure applies to all travelers and returnees).

4. Lifting of visa suspension

The temporarily suspended single-entry visas and multiple-entry visas issued by Japanese embassies, consulates general, and consulates in various countries (regions) will resume on October 11, 2022.

Since January 21, the validity period of the issued “business class” or “residence class” visas and visas issued under “New Border Measures (4)” (see Note 2 of Article 1) has been suspended, 2021, based on Announcement of the Japanese Government on January 13, 2021.

5. Lifting the suspension of visa exemption measures

The visa-free arrangement, suspended due to border measures, resumes on 11 October 2022.

6. Restrictions on arrival at airports/ports

Airports/ports that suspended international flights/cruises have started lifting the suspension after preparations are complete.
