Get in touch with the reality of the mysterious ocean and the people who live there. Hair and makeup artist Haruka Tazaki travels around the world and travels alone【No.3 / Sipadan Island, Malaysia】 | Vogue Japan
Children are happy in any environment. The children in the village seemed to be very interested in the sudden appearance of the unidentified Japanese with a navel, and they didn’t think about anything, and caused a lot of trouble while yelling. It was a bit of fun and I chased after it, but it slammed and ran away. I do nothing (laughs).
Back at the resort, with my mind in a fog, I asked some Malaysian women I met while diving about the village.
It is inhabited by the Bajau Laut, a people who have migrated across the seas of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines for more than 1,000 years and seem to live in a traditional hut. There are said to be 3,000 Bajau people living around Marble Island alone.
Their poor life has not changed since ancient times. They have no nationality, cannot obtain citizenship of any country, and children without birth certificates cannot even receive formal education. According to a United Nations study, there are more than 10 million stateless people in the world.
That night, as I ate the extra food laid out in front of me, I thought about the people in the village. What have I seen in the past forty years? If I hadn’t set foot on this land, I’d be living in the moment, unaware of the village, unaware of the existence of Baja Laut, and seeing only a small part of the world.
The world is full of realities that are not written in school textbooks. If you are unable to study in the circumstances you live in now, then you have no choice but to go out and study.
Before I passed through the security gate, I suddenly looked back and saw the girl who had been following me wave her hand in embarrassment. I laughed too, and waved.
Day after day, once in a lifetime contact with nature and people is more likely to burn than tanned skin.
