――What can the fashion industry do to achieve sustainable development?

There are many things, including the fur problem I just said, but I still have to pay attention and care about anything. The best thing to do is just not care. What materials are the clothes and shoes made of and are they really necessary. It is important for producers and consumers to think about the future when making and buying products. For example, I have been working on the interior design of the resort since SONEVA was built, but from the beginning I have only used thinned and reclaimed wood. It was difficult to find these materials in 1994, but when I thought about the future of the earth, I never gave up.

——The interior of the cabin is not too gorgeous, and the design is natural and calm.

The interior was as natural as possible and I took great care with the color scheme. I actually found wood for upholstery in the UK. As the UK’s telephone lines went underground, a large number of felled pine poles, previously used as utility poles, became obsolete. I used it, but people couldn’t understand my command “Don’t cut down the trees on the island!”

――What is the ultimate luxury in your mind?

We call it smart luxury, but in SONEVA, you can pick and eat organic vegetables from the island’s vegetable garden, look up at the starry sky at the observatory, and experience a lifestyle that cannot be easily experienced in the city. Eating fresh veggies and fish fresh from the sea and spending time in silence… I think letting healthy energy flow through your body is the ultimate luxury. Nowadays, with the popularity of the Internet and SNS, information floods into our lives like a flood, but I don’t think it’s healthy. I think Wi-Fi is also a serious health hazard, but I have a hard time believing that, too. We may have to wait another 20 years.
