Cambodia is a favorite destination for many travelers, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Despite the scars of the country’s tragic past, the people are warm and friendly; plus, there are some amazing sights, including the archaeological wonder of Angkor, a variety of culinary and cultural highlights, and the vibrant capital, Phnom Penh. Do I need a visa?
All visitors to Cambodia require a visa, except for passport holders of Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei and Myanmar. Other passport holders can apply for e-Visa at evisa.gov.kh. You can also get a visa on arrival at most ports of entry for $30 (bring two passport photos).
How long will it take me to get there?
It takes two hours to travel from Singapore to Phnom Penh. Cambodia is seven hours ahead of GMT and one hour behind Singapore.
What is the financial situation?
The Cambodian currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR). The U.S. dollar is widely used in Cambodia, although it is useful to have some Cambodian currency for small purchases. Changes are also returned in riel. ATMs with Visa or MasterCard can be used to withdraw money in major cities. Many upscale hotels, boutiques and restaurants accept credit cards.
When is the best time to visit?
You can visit Cambodia any time of the year; the average temperature is around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius.
Cambodia has four seasons:
- November to February, cool and dry
- March to May, hot and dry
- June to August, hot and humid
- September to October, cool and humid
What are dialects?
The official language of Cambodia is Khmer. Also speaks English and French. Here are some phrases to get you started:

Is there anything I should know about meeting locals?
When greeting formally, place your hands on your chest and near your face; bow your head slightly.
What is a must-try dish?
Fish amok, a fish mousse with fresh coconut milk, and kroeung, a Khmer curry paste. If you dare, try fried insects too – grasshoppers, bamboo worms and more.
What should I buy as a souvenir?
Khmer silks, woven cushions, candles and soaps, rice paper and Mekong quilts.
