Entry requirements – Indonesia travel advice

This page reflects the UK Government’s understanding of the current rules for travel from the UK by persons holding a full “British Citizen” passport, which apply to the most common types of travel.

Indonesian authorities set and enforce entry rules.

All passengers

You need permission from Indonesian authorities to enter Indonesia.

From March 7, 2022, British citizens entering Indonesia for tourism purposes can apply for a visa on arrival for a fee of IDR 500,000. This visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended once (up to 30 days) by applying to an immigration office in Indonesia. Make sure you extend your visa within the first 30 days to avoid overstay penalties. Visa on arrival is now available at the following airports and seaports:

Foreigners can also apply for visitor visas or limited stay visas, including visas on compassionate grounds. The application should be made by the local sponsor to the Director of Immigration.

The Indonesian Embassy has introduced a new electronic visa system. You or your sponsor should submit your visa application online.

Arriving in Indonesia if you are fully vaccinated

If you have received a full course of COVID-19 vaccination (minimum 2 doses), you can enter Indonesia as follows:

Those planning to purchase a “Visa on Arrival” should:

Install the Cares Protect mobile app
Show proof of full vaccination (except passengers under the age of 18 or those who cannot be vaccinated due to health reasons)
Temperature check upon arrival, RT-PCR test if symptoms of COVID-19 and/or temperature above 37.5 degrees. If you test positive, you may be taken to hospital for treatment or to an isolation center at your own expense.If negative, fully vaccinated travelers can continue their journey

Travelers who have received the full COVID-19 vaccination and booster vaccinations can travel domestically without an antigen/PCR test. Travelers who have not received any booster vaccinations may need to show a negative antigen/PCR test to travel domestically. Please contact your airline for more details.

Proof of vaccination status

You must present proof of vaccination status to enter and/or travel within Indonesia.

You can use the UK COVID Pass to prove your vaccination record when entering Indonesia. You may need to show soft and hard copies of your NHS vaccination certificate at different stages of your journey. The NHS appointment card you get from a vaccination centre is not intended to be used as proof of vaccination and should not be used to certify your vaccination status.

The British Embassy understands that hard copies of NHS certificates are sufficient for most purposes (checkers and immigration workers at the Indonesian border and facilities entering Indonesia).

Vaccine Validation

Please note that it is the responsibility of the Indonesian Government (usually the Ministry of Health authority upon arrival at your port of entry) to recognise the UK NHS Vaccine Certification and to verify the certificate you use on the Peduli Lindungi app. It is no longer possible for the British Embassy to provide this verification.

Arrive in Indonesia if you are not fully vaccinated

If you are not fully vaccinated, you will:

RT-PCR required on arrival
Partially vaccinated or unvaccinated travelers will be required to self-isolate for 5 x 24 hours and undergo a second RT-PCR prior to release from isolation

If you have had COVID-19

If you were infected with COVID-19 and recovered within 30 days before departure, you do not need to present proof of vaccination and negative RT-PCR prior to departure.However, you will need an RT-PCR test on arrival and a certificate of recovery from the hospital in your country of origin

The Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration (DGI) no longer automatically extends expired visas or residence permits under the COVID-19 emergency arrangement. In countries the KITAS app is no longer available.

KITAS Expansion – Offshore Applications

The residence permit for KITAS holders is about to expire, but is currently outside Indonesia and can apply for an extension through a sponsor. The sponsor must submit an application to the Immigration Office with a copy of the passport and proof of leaving Indonesia. Applications submitted without biometric sampling. The sponsor must report the arrival of the foreigner within 30 days.

children and adolescents

Children 12 to 17 years old follow the same rules as fully or partially vaccinated travelers.

If you are transiting through Indonesia

Transit is when you pass through a country on your way to your final destination.

Passengers who remain airside are allowed to transit through Indonesia. Passengers will need to obtain approval from the port health authority before continuing their journey.They should have evidence of vaccination status, PCR test results and follow-up flight details ready for inspection

If you are transiting through Indonesia on your way to another country and will be passing through immigration (sometimes called a layover), for example to check into a hotel for a flight the next day, you will need to comply with visitor requirements.

All passengers must have proof of vaccination status.

Exemptions from these rules may apply to:

Travelers under the age of 18, if they present proof of policy from their home country
Foreigners who cannot be vaccinated due to medical conditions. They must present a certificate from a medical professional to confirm this.
Diplomatic/official visa holders for ministerial/official visits
Active flight or crew

Check your passport and travel documents before travelling

If you are visiting or residing in Indonesia, your passport should be valid for 6 months from the date of your arrival.

Please check with your travel provider or the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate to ensure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

All tourists are required to present proof of vaccination at check-in prior to any scheduled travel in order to enter Indonesia without self-isolation and PCR testing on arrival at their own expense. You should comply with any additional screening measures taken by the authorities.

visa scam

Beware of visa scams by fraudulent visa agents who take your money and may not be able to provide a visa or provide the wrong visa. This may result in you overstaying and subject to a fine of IDR 1 million per day, detention, deportation and possible re-entry ban. You should use the Indonesian Immigration Self-Service Portal.

Visa scams are on the rise in Indonesia. The British Embassy is aware that there are currently many foreigners in Bali who are victims of visa scams. Many lost large sums of money, and some were deported despite paying their agents large sums to secure the correct visa or extension of stay.

If you wish to use a proxy, do thorough due diligence and check reviews and recommendations.

dual citizenship

Indonesian law does not allow dual citizenship for adults over the age of 18. If you are a British national retaining Indonesian citizenship, you may experience immigration difficulties in Indonesia.

UK emergency travel document

UK Emergency Travel Documents can be used for airside transit and exit from Indonesia, but not for entry into Indonesia. If you apply for an ETD while you are in Indonesia, you may need to obtain an exit permit from the Immigration Department to leave the country. We recommend that you contact the nearest immigration office to check before you travel.

Proof of continuing travel

Immigration officials in Indonesia may ask you to provide proof of continued travel (such as a return or continuation ticket). You should make all reservations before traveling to Indonesia. Some airlines are denying passengers boarding without evidence of continued travel.

Departure and Airport Tax

Airport tax is included in the ticket price for all domestic flights within Indonesia. For some international flights departing from Indonesia, airport tax may not be included in the ticket price. You should check with your airline or travel agent before traveling.

overstayed visa

Overstaying without proper authorization is a serious matter and tourists can be detained or refused to leave the country until a fine of IDR 1 million per day is paid. After 60 days of overstaying, you will be detained and possibly jailed.

register

If you live in a private residence (not a hotel) in Indonesia, you must register your presence with the local police or you could face a fine of IDR 5 million. If you are staying in a hotel, you will be automatically registered.

travel with medicine

If you bring any prescription medicines into Indonesia, make sure to bring a copy of the prescription with you. The prescription must cover the amount of medicine you are carrying. Note that some prescription or other drugs, including some psychotropic substances, available in the UK may be illegal in Indonesia. If you are unsure, please consult your doctor and the Indonesian embassy for advice before travelling.
