Economic changes shift domestic tourism in Japan|TVBS Newspaper Network
TOKYO (TVBS News) – Domestic destinations are becoming increasingly popular among Japanese as travel trends shift, driven by economic factors and a rebound in Japan’s tourism industry.
The Japan National Tourism Administration reported that outbound tourism dropped significantly in March, with only 1.22 million outbound tourists from Japan, a 36.8% decrease from March 2019.
The decline has been attributed to a weak yen, rising air ticket prices and slow wage growth, prompting many to instead explore the beauty of their own country.
Domestic tourism is on the rise
During Golden Week, there are many national holidays, and local tourists show a strong preference for domestic tourist destinations in Japan such as Kochi, Atami, Okinawa, and Hokkaido.
A record 3.1 million tourists visited Japan in March, further evidence of a surge in domestic travel interest and a significant rebound in the country’s tourism industry.
The shift towards local exploration is reshaping the focus of major airlines, with Japan Airlines and ANA increasingly catering to inbound travelers and areas with higher demand.
Airlines adapt to new trends
Recognizing current travel preferences, Japan Airlines and ANA are adjusting strategies to better serve the changing market. They predict outbound travel may not recover until next year at the earliest, underscoring the lasting impact of economic factors on travel decisions.
