Returning to everyday life while traveling
– Global gross bookings will continue to perform well across all travel categories in January 2023
– EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and Americas (North and South America) regions almost recovered to pre-pandemic levels in January 2020
– The APAC (Asia-Pacific) region lifted travel restrictions that had lasted for more than two years and experienced a historic increase from 40 points in 2020 during the pandemic to 141 points in 2023.

Significant growth in overseas travel bookings in the Asia-Pacific region
The breakdown of flight bookings for key Asia Pacific regions in January shows a significant increase in the proportion of tickets classified as international

Green travel
– Asia-Pacific tourists are less interested in eco-tourism than Western tourists who value sustainable travel
– 21% of Japanese travelers responded that they are “focused on booking sustainable travel through filters such as ‘low emissions’.” 33% responded

Year-over-year growth in online travel bookings outperformed suppliers*1
– Global bookings in January compared to the same month last year, with OTA*2 significantly outpacing supplier bookings
– Travelers prefer to use online travel booking sites and portals when booking
– In Japan, online bookings from OTAs increased 3.4 times and suppliers’ online bookings increased 2.2 times compared to last year

*1 Travel service providers who own and operate hotels, aircraft, and vehicles, *2 Travel agencies that only operate online

Mobile preferred for travel-related bookings
Between January 2022 and January 2023, flights booked on mobile phones increased by 9 percentage points, from 51% to 60%

Search Booking Period – Hotels & Resorts (Asia Pacific)
– The average time from initial hotel and resort search to booking is approximately 3 days less on desktop than on mobile
-If you just look at the top 25% of travelers with the fastest booking times, those are booking faster on mobile than on desktop
– In Japan, Japanese travelers averaged 14.6 days from desktop search to booking and 17.9 days on mobile, showing a trend toward longer booking times than APAC travelers.
