Bangkok celebrates 241st anniversary from April 21-25


To commemorate the founding of Krung Rattanakosin (Bangkok), a series of benevolent events were held to commemorate and commemorate King Rama I and all the kings of the Chakri dynasty.

The Ministry of Culture has announced a series of events and activities to celebrate the 241st anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin or Krung Thep Mahanakhon (Bangkok) from 21 to 25 April 2023 at museums, temples and major landmarks on Rattanakosin Island or Bangkok Old Town held town.

The event commemorates and commemorates the kindness of Phra Bat Somdet Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok Maharaj (King Rama I) – the founder of the Rattanakosin kingdom and the first monarch of the Chakri dynasty – and all the kings of the Chakri dynasty.

Bangkok was established on April 21, 1782. Rattanakosin Island or Bangkok’s Old Town is located along the Chao Phraya River in the Phra Nakhon district. Famous and popular landmarks such as the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram (Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho or Temple of the Reclining Buddha) are located here.

The main venues for the five-day event are Bangkok National Museum, National Theatre, Santi Chai Prakan Park, Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Centre, Siam Museum, Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan and Bang Lamphu Museum. In addition, 20 other venues will host related events.

The Bangkok National Museum and National Theater will hold a worship service on April 20 to commemorate the anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin. This will be followed by a merit ceremony at Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho) and a ceremony at the Shrine of the City Pillar on 21 April.

The opening ceremony will be held at the National Museum and National Theater in Bangkok. Here, five days of cultural performances, a nightly museum, a retro-style food market and a bazaar selling cultural products from Thailand’s 76 provinces and Bangkok’s 50 districts.

At Santi Chai Prakan Park, the event will be held from April 21st to May 7th. These include exhibits commemorating all the kings of the Chakri dynasty, a multimedia show celebrating Bangkok’s 241st anniversary, an illuminated tunnel, an open-air cinema and orchestral performances.

Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center will host a photography competition, workshops and a contemporary art product fair to commemorate the 241st anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin, as well as related events for the ASEAN community.


The Siam Museum will host a scholarly discussion and exhibition on the 241 years of Krung Rattanakosin.

Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan will host temple fairs and various events on the 241st anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin.

The Bang Lamphu Museum will be free and will host community tours led by local youth guides, including arts and crafts workshops and cultural performances.

Activities related to the 241st anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin will also be held at 20 other venues, such as making merit and worshiping Buddha statues.

The BMTA will organize sightseeing buses and trams and provide free pick-up and drop-off at various locations.
