AIT plans to expand Taipei office | Taiwan News
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) wants to expand its office in Taipei City to increase personnel and strengthen relationships, reports emerged Wednesday (July 5).
Located in the Neihu district of the capital, the office building opened in 2019. As relations between the two countries strengthen and deepen, AIT hopes to recruit more staff to provide commercial and cultural services, CNA reported.
According to reports, AIT hopes to use the green space it has disposed of to build additional offices, storage rooms, a staff leisure center and parking spaces. An AIT spokesperson told CNA that the adjacent vacant lot presents an opportunity to enhance the organization’s future presence in a safe area of downtown.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it will assist relevant agencies to provide assistance within the framework of urban development laws and regulations. A local KMT Taipei councilor said AIT should receive the necessary assistance, but also demanded an explanation of why the current 6.5 hectares are not enough and whether the expansion will be used for military purposes.
