After 3 years, travel veteran Chang Theng Hwee returns to tourism

MANILA, Philippines – Travel veteran Chang Theng Hwee, who has visited nearly 140 countries for five years, is back in the tourism industry after a three-year sabbatical.

A pioneer in bespoke travel experiences in Singapore, Chang has just joined Intriq Journey as Chairman, effective March 2023.

In his new role, he drew on his experience as former CEO of Scott Dunn Asia and founder of local brand Country Holidays. His fame predated him when he decided to take a hiatus in 2019 as one of the pioneers of bespoke travel, leaving an indelible footprint in the world of travel. So Intriq Journey co-founders Jess Yap, Lim Kok Yong, and Stella Fan wasted no time getting his services when they discovered he had broken off official commitments.

“I’ve always loved the luxury travel market, especially when it comes to exploring uncharted destinations. I’m honored to join Intriq Journey’s strong team – co-founders Jess Yap, Lim Kok Yong and Stella Fan,” said Chang.

Fueled by a thirst for unusual adventures around the globe, Chang has explored 140 countries over the past five years.

He founded Country Holidays with his wife in 1994 and has grown from initially offering intrepid explorers off-the-beaten-path trekking adventures in Nepal to become one of the leading travel companies in the Asia-Pacific region as it specializes in many unique adventure tours Customer Preferences.

Country Holidays has since expanded its operations with offices in Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Dubai. After the company was acquired in 2018, Chang oversaw the operations of Scott Dunn’s Asia office as CEO before deciding to take a break in 2019 to pursue extensive travel on personal interests.

When he left the industry in 2019, Chang traveled after launching Intriq Journey in 2020 and visited 13 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the pandemic eased considerably, Chang has seen the recovery of the travel industry and how it has rekindled interest and demand for luxury travel. So when he was offered a new position, he accepted it. Now, as the company’s helm, his aim is to offer unique opportunities for travel experiences, especially in remote and exotic locations.

Chang will focus on the company’s next phase of strategic growth through the expansion of its recently launched elite hotel membership program Intriq Keys and Intriq Finesse, a luxury small group travel collection.
