A city in Laos is unexpectedly popular with Thai tourists
A city in Laos is currently popular with tourists from Thailand. Most of the room bookings in Luang Prabang, the former capital of Laos, are booked by Thai tourists. Since Laos lifted entry restrictions in May, Thais have accounted for 90 percent of room bookings in the country.
Laos has fewer tourists from countries such as Europe, South Korea, and China. Travel is still tricky, and people around the world are dealing with an economic crisis. But because of Thai tourists, the chairman of the Luang Prabang Hotels and Guesthouses Association said hotels and guesthouses are almost fully booked.
The Luang Prabang Tourism Office said more than 67,000 domestic tourists arrived in the city in the first three months of 2022, up 74 percent from the same period last year. Now that travel restrictions in Laos have been lifted, tour operators are bracing for an expected influx of tourists. They have renovated and upgraded several tourist hotspots and improved hospitality services.
Luang Prabang is hosting a Buddhist Lent boat festival this week, hoping to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
Luang Prabang is a world-famous historical city, and its old town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourists come to see Luang Prabang’s ancient temples and ruins as well as the countryside.
Following the evaluation, the city recently received its second ASEAN Clean Tourism Standard Award. It is considered to have met nearly 93 percent of the criteria in the ASEAN Clean Tourism Standard.
With the influx of Thai tourists into Luang Prabang, more Laotian tourists have also recently crossed into Thailand. On July 1, the day when the “Thai Pass” was finally abolished, about 3,618 Laotians crossed the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge and entered the northeastern city of Nong Khai. Tourism between Thailand and Laos appears to be strengthening due to the easing of travel restrictions.
