A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit the southwestern part of the Philippines on the outskirts of the capital on Thursday. Fortunately, preliminary reports indicate that there were no immediate major damages or casualties from the quake.
The quake originated at a depth of about 120 kilometers below the surface, near the town of Hukay. Deep earthquakes, while often felt over wider areas, generally carry a lower risk of major damage.
Hukay, about 140 kilometers from Manila, bore the brunt of the seismic activity. The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council quickly responded to the situation and said that so far, no major damage or casualties have been reported. However, ongoing assessments are underway to ensure a full picture of the situation.
The Philippines is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, due to the surrounding seismic faults, frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Currently, Mayon Volcano, reputed to be the most active in the country, is erupting. Some 18,000 people have been forced to evacuate from the northeastern province of Albay due to the potential risks posed by the eruption, despite relatively mild volcanic activity so far.
Authorities remain vigilant and ready to respond effectively to any further developments. The safety and well-being of affected populations remains paramount and ongoing monitoring and response efforts are aimed at minimizing potential damage and ensuring timely evacuation and assistance to those affected by these natural events.
