Two airlines in Vietnam will offer regular non-stop flights between Vietnam and the United States starting next year. While Vietnam is an increasingly popular destination among American tourists in recent years, it’s not always the easiest place to visit. With no direct flights between the two countries, travelers are forced to transit through other countries and take several flights to reach their destination – but, as anyone who’s ever visited Vietnam will tell you, it’s well worth it.

Thankfully, the trip is going to get easier. In 2019, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration granted Vietnam Category 1 country status, which means it is now finally possible to arrange direct flights between the two countries. After 20 years in the making, U.S. travelers seem to finally be able to take advantage of direct flights between the two countries, not just one airline, but two, according to reports. Vietnam’s flagship carrier, Vietnam Airlines, is leading the way in taking advantage of the possibility of new routes, announcing its intention to launch direct flights from Vietnam to the United States last month.

The airline launched its maiden flight from Ho Chi Minh City to San Francisco International Airport last week with a flight time of 12 hours and 52 minutes. Back home, the flight to Vietnam took 15 hours and 48 minutes. While weekly flights are currently limited to twice a week due to Covid-19 restrictions, the airline plans to offer daily service in the new year and is already eyeing routes between Los Angeles and Hanoi.

When Vietnam Airlines increases its flight frequency in 2022, it is likely to see competitors open up their own U.S. routes. Bamboo Airways, a fast-growing airline launched in 2017, has launched its own test flight from Hanoi to San Francisco and is awaiting FAA approval for a regular route that could be a treat for American travelers. Bamboo Airways also used a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner – the same aircraft used in the Vietnam Airlines test flight.
