11 Things To Do In Hiroshima

When people travel to Japan, Hiroshima Probably the last few cities that come to mind. After all, it’s not as big as Tokyo or Osaka, it’s not as rustic as Kyoto, and it’s not as iconic as the Okinawa or Hokkaido regions.

However, we all know Hiroshima at least from our history textbooks. This is the first military target of nuclear weapons in human history. On August 6, 1945, during World War II, the city was where the U.S. Army Air Forces dropped the atomic bomb “Little Boy.”

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, or Atomic Bomb Dome, is the only surviving structure from the area where the atomic bomb was dropped. It now serves as a memorial to the victims – mostly civilians – and serves as a reminder of the disastrous effects of nuclear weapons and an expression of hope for world peace.

While Hiroshima may not be as accessible as major cities like Tokyo or Osaka, there are a few ways to get there. The most direct way is to fly into the city. Certain airlines such as Singapore Airlines offer direct flights to Hiroshima. Otherwise, you can fly from the capital Tokyo to Hiroshima on a domestic flight.

If high altitudes are not your thing, you can take the Shinkansen or Shinkansen from nearby cities like Osaka or Fukuoka. Don’t forget to use the Japan Rail Pass for extra savings.
